Yongha’s 2nd paper entitled “Determination of carboxyl dissociation degree and pKa in weak polyelectrolyte membranes via POT titration and FTIR analysis for clean technologies in sustainability” has been accepted to Macromolecules. This paper reports the fundamental understanding of dissociation process in weakly charged polymer membranes. This understanding is required to broaden the application of weak polyelectrolyte membranes for sustainability and decarbonization.

Prof. Hee Jeung Oh has been named the 2024 recipient of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Separations Division’s FRI/John G. Kunesh Award. This award recognizes “outstanding contributions to the academic, scientific, technological, industrial, or service areas involving separations technologies.” Prof. Oh was honored for her research in the development of polymeric materials and processes for adsorption and membrane-based separations. Yongha Kim’s 1st paper entitled “Weak Polyelectrolyte Membranes with a Wide Ion-Exchange Capacity (IEC) Range and Limited Water Swelling in Clean Technologies for Sustainability” was accepted to ACS Applied Polymer Materials. This paper describes the design of new weak polyelectrolyte membranes with a wide ion-exchange capacity (IEC) and limited water swelling and their transport properties. This AA-PEGDA system offers an unique opportunity to investigate water and ion transport using the same chemical structure for the first time. Also this library enables us to develop a mechanistic understanding of water and ion transport in charged polymer membranes.

Prof. Hee Jeung Oh served on the 2023 Materials Day Panel “Reducing dependence on critical minerals for energy storage systems through innovations in materials, reuse, and recycling.” This panel discussed the climate impact of emerging and state-of-the-art energy storage system technologies, including sourcing of materials, their use, and potential for recycling and reuse.

The Oh lab received two research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) IUCRC (Industry-University Cooperative Research Center)‘s MAST (Membrane Science, Engineering and Technology) Center with Prof. Andrew Zydney. These two grants will fund our work on (1) designing ion-exchange, charged structured polymer membranes for enhanced electrically aided separations of charged species, and (2) investigation of detergent/surfactant retention during ultrafiltration/diafiltration for biotherapeutic formulation. Taylor Lecture Series in Materials Science and Engineering honors the memory of Professor Nelson W. Taylor (1869–1965) who was head of Penn State’s Department of Ceramics from 1933–1943.
